UK Shared Prosperity Fund

The Merthyr Tydfil Institute for the Blind (MTIB) is a long-established social enterprise in South Wales that focuses on supporting disabled and disadvantaged people into sustainable employment. Alongside its manufacturing activities, the organisation delivers a range of training and employability programmes designed to improve skills, confidence, and access to work.

A key part of this work is funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), a UK Government initiative aimed at boosting local economies, skills and opportunities following the end of EU structural funding. In areas such as Merthyr Tydfil, the fund represents a significant investment in regeneration, employment support, and community development, with millions of pounds allocated to improve outcomes for residents and businesses.

Through UKSPF-funded projects, MTIB operates targeted employment and training programmes that support individuals who are unemployed, economically inactive, or seeking to progress in work. These programmes typically provide personalised, one-to-one guidance as well as group-based learning, covering areas such as CV writing, interview preparation, and broader employability skills. The aim is to help participants build confidence, develop practical skills, and move towards sustainable employment.

Importantly, MTIB’s delivery model emphasises inclusion. The charity specialises in working with people who have disabilities or health conditions that may limit their access to the labour market. UKSPF funding enables MTIB to tailor its support to individual needs, offering flexible pathways into work or further training. This approach aligns with wider “levelling up” objectives by reducing barriers to employment and promoting equal access to economic opportunities.

Overall, the partnership between MTIB and the UKSPF demonstrates how national funding streams can be delivered at a local level through third-sector organisations. By combining government investment with community-based expertise, MTIB helps translate policy goals into practical outcomes—supporting individuals into jobs, strengthening local skills, and contributing to the wider economic regeneration of Merthyr Tydfil.
